My Life for You

Personal Note: This post will be the story of my own personal struggles in the last 6-7 months with: personal loss (my wife and mother), of losing my sense of direction and purpose for a while. And struggling with loneliness and emotional pain.

It’s easy to say your life totally belongs to the Lord. People go forward at evangelistic crusades all the time and “give” their lives to God. Many times it’s because there is some crisis happening in their lives at the time and and they really need God to “bail” them out of jail, so to speak. Other times its a matter of really good preaching convincing many people to come forward. But honestly speaking, most people have a crisis or need in their lives when they come forward during an altar call.

But what about a crisis or crises in the life of a believer? Well, of course, I can only speak from my own experience and perspective.

About six months ago now my wife of forty-eight years passed away after a long bout with cancer. About three weeks after that my mother died. Of course, it’s impossible for me to put into words the kind of trauma, depression, some anger, and grieving that I went through. In fact, I am still going through that to some degree, though it is getting better (thank God!).

Sometimes within the course of one day I will break down and weep for no apparent reason. But then, usually, but not always, it will come to my mind why I am weeping. Most often it relates to losing someone in my life or missing someone I feel should be in my life. Also, there are what I call “triggers” which are situations, people, music, movies, or past experiences that bring back to my mind someone whom I have lost. I try to avoid those triggers if I can!

The Why of Transformation

We all know that God is in the “business” of transforming His people. Here are just a few example from the scriptures:

“Do not be comformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Philippians 1:6

And many more …

But it comes down to one question:

Why? Why does He transform us?

Why does God take us through suffering?

There can be only one answer to that very universal question:

It is for the completion of His eternal purpose!

Which leads to the most penetrating question ever:

What is His eternal purpose?

Well, that would definitely take more than a blog post to answer. But in the first place I would recommend you read the letter to the Ephesians. There are also links at the end of this blog post that will give you resources that will help you.

But (in a nutshell) the eternal purpose is all about God getting what He wanted since before creation: a Kingdom, a Body, a Bride, a City, a Community, a Family, and a House… all inside of a New Creation!

Not…

An institution, a club, an organization, a building (made of dead stones), a hierarchy, a business, a once per week ritual, etc, etc, etc.

In fact, it will take you the rest of your life (and beyond!) to discover all of the glories of this marvelous purpose!

In Conclusion

So you see, this is why God has been taking me through the “meat grinder”, so to speak. He wants to use me (and all of you as well!) to help bring about that glorious kingdom. It will take a crucified people who are dead to themselves but alive to God.

  1. Hi Milt.

Thank you so much for opening your heart and life to us all. When pain so immense is due to a loss so great it passes understanding, weeping for no apparent or conscious reason. How deep the human heart (spirit) goes. I can’t and don’t want to imagine the depth you have faced.

We can only find agreement having seen a plan so glorious, so wonderous and so kind in intention toward us that He would use all things to bring about such an eternally valuable transformation. An increase of His Life in us.

We love you dear brother. We stand with you and move towards this glorious Purpose of the Ages together for His sake as the sole endeavour of our lives.

Much love to you in Christ

For the Praise of His Glory

    Derek

  2. Dear Brother Milt,

As someone who has also experienced tremendous loss, while words fail me to express how deeply sorry I am for your present incalculable suffering, please know and believe that in the spirit we are knitted together in Christ, the healer of the broken heart. And in your brokenness His wholeness and fullness can shine to the glory of God and to the edification of the saints. You are not alone. You matter. You are precious. And you are loved by Christ and His body.
