Run Wild

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

This scripture has always fascinated me, especially: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Shouldn’t it read: “It was for Christ that we were set free?” But no, “it is for freedom that we are set free.”

I would like to propose to you that the word “freedom” here is synonymous with the word “Christ”. Why do I say this? Because of this verse:

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.” Col.3:11

So, if Christ is our all wouldn’t it mean that He IS freedom? So if Christ is our true freedom then outward circumstances have nothing to do with our freedom. We could be held in the tightest prison cell in the world and yet be totally free!

Why? Because our freedom is not a thing, a place, or a circumstance. Our freedom is a Person! Christ Himself! And that Person can never be bound by anyone or anything!

Okay, with this as our foundation, let’s take a look at what Freedom is NOT.

Freedom is not Religion or Legalism.

Religion

Religion is the attempt of our enemy, Satan, to fabricate what God has done and is doing. It is definitely a cheap imitation of God’s eternal purpose. It’s the enemies attempt at trying to put Christ and the Church in a box.

Recently I moved back to my home in Western Colorado. A few weeks ago the moving company brought all the stuff. Oh my! What a ton of boxes! I am still trying to unpack them all. But all of those things inside of the boxes were never meant to be prisoners of those containers. They were made to be free. That is, outside of all of the boxes!

And likewise, we believers many times allow ourselves to be confined to “boxes”. What about when we (like zombies) pile into that big box on Sunday morning? Then we go through a ritual of songs, prayers, and preaching. Or, perhaps, in some cases some religious calisthenics and prayers by rote. But that is all just outward conditions displaying inward spiritual bankruptcy.

Why do we go to that “box” every week and listen to that person on the podium? Do not ALL the saints have a voice? Do not ALL of the believers have Christ living inside of them? Do they not ALL have gifts and anointings? Where is the Body of Christ in all of this? Just image if your own human body only had a few parts that functioned! That would be called paralysis!

Legalism

It is for freedom that we are set free!

Dear brothers and sisters, our only law is love and the life of Christ inside of each one of us. Our only occupation is to know Him in us and our brothers and sisters. But wow… what an occupation! And what is the result, the fruit, the outflowing of this occupation? The Church! Yes, the church of Jesus Christ, Christ in Us, the hope of Glory. Yes! The Body and Bride of Jesus Christ.

Dear ones, the law only kills. Please don’t use the Bible to try to “lord” it over your brothers and sisters. It’s not a rule book! It’s the written revelation and expression of Jesus Christ, who is the Living Word!

There are a lot of Christian Pharisees out there!

But I have some excellent news …

Your Lord is just waiting for you to break so that He can set you totally free!

You have been like a caged lion all these years.

But lions were made to roam free!

  1. Another great tie in to a For King and Country song. From the first time I heard this song I thought of you and Mary and your metaphor of lions learning to hunt. Which revolutionized my understanding, by the way! This album got me thru a couple of tough years.

    1. Hey Angela,

This without exception the best Christian band that I have heard in a very long time. And yes, it has also helped me immensely with some of the challenges I have been facing recently.

Thanks sister for your comment. Love and miss you!
